Read and/or listen along to this post.
O hello there!
You’re probably wondering what I’m doing in your in-box, or the the wilds of the internet (or your ear with my gravelly morning voice). It’s because… I want to share some delight with you. And some joy. And, yes, you’re probably saying: Dave, have you not looked around, the world is a hideous place right now. And it is very ugly, but I just wanted to…
Well, basically, I read great books last year, by Ross Gay. The Book of Delights. Inciting Joy. The Book of (More) Delights. The Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude. Now I’ve read all of his poetry as well, and there’s no more of that— no more new stuff of that in the world. So I need to create my own— and I have found that I really enjoy writing my own delights, and even more so, sending them in voice messages to my friends. I wanted to find a way to do that — disseminating these delights — without losing the intimacy. And this is the nearest and best (and a smile comes into my voice when I say this next, rather corporate sounding phrase) distribution network, I could think of.
And hopefully — I only plan to do four parts in this ctrl+alt+delight series, one every week for a month — hopefully word will spread and Ross Gay will share some of his delights, as he goes, rather than accumulating them and then editing and collating them into a precious book for me to read every 5 years. But at the same time I think (and here a small involuntary audible gasp of delight escapes before I share my next thought) I think I prefer it that way.
Please forward this to a friend who might be interested. If you want to unsubscribe that’s also fine (slightly pass agg tone in my voice, my apologies). You can also just stay subscribed, not read, and then one day, years from now, when you’re searching for something particular in your inbox, you’ll come across this very strange post from the past. I know I always enjoy when that happens.
Otherwise, stay tuned. The first delight. Will drop. On. Monday.
